Summer days

Here are a few pics taken over the start of our summer. Friends visiting from the UK, lazy days in the garden and the beach – loving every minute of the weather. I’m glad the rain has finally stopped!

PS: Freya’s bottle was filled with water before any of you start judging! She likes to say ‘cheers’ now and won’t do it with one of her plastic bottles. She has to have the real thing of course…

The Hatchery

Here are a few pics which were taken at The Hatchery. It’s a rustic but beautifully decorated self-catering spot up the north coast. We went with a big group of friends and were there over new years. I think it was the first time in years where I actually made it to midnight! We spent a lot of time swimming, tanning, playing in the lagoon, eating, drinking and laughing. It was good to have all of us together again – bar a few of our friends who lives overseas or in Cape Town – but majority of us were together and that alone made it a good start to the new year.

School reunion

On Saturday we’re having our TWENTY year school reunion please. That makes me feel really old just typing that. Can’t believe I’ve been out of school for that long when it seems like I was there yesterday. I have so many good memories from school days and I’m happy to say that a lot of my friends from back then, are still my close friends to this day. Here are some pics from our reunion ten years ago.

More to follow next week…

Small + Mighty

A friend of mine, Cathy, has just started her own blog. It’s been a long time coming and I’m so glad she’s finally doing it. She’s South African but lives in Seattle with her husband, Shane, and their son, Fynn. She writes beautifully and takes the most amazing pictures. It’s always a bit daunting starting a blog for the first time. I procrastinated for ages but once you get into it, it’s a good release. It’s just hard finding the time to keep adding posts!

I miss these 3 so much and really wish they lived back in SA with us so we can bring up our kids together. One day. I live in hope.small_mighty

Father’s day

We celebrated Father’s Day at Jo and Steve’s place last Sunday. My Dad made a Portuguese-style curried crab, while Steve’s Dad did a Mauritian-style fish curry. Both were so damn delicious. I ate far too much but it was really amazing sitting with our huge, extended family at the table outside enjoying good food and wine. One of my many happy moments of being grateful that we moved back home. Good times, good times…

Stay strong

This is a message to a friend of mine, you know who you are. I’m thinking of you. Stay strong and be positive. All will be well.

Here’s a pic of a mouse pulling his muscles – I thought that he might cheer you up (so your style!)

Drakensberg

Our friends, Ed and Alex, from London, came to visit us recently. We really wanted to take them to see the Berg while they were here. We went away for 3 days and loved every minute of it. It’s the longest we’ve been away from Freya but it was a good break for us too.

While we were there, we went on a walk and came across this beautiful natural pool with a small waterfall. Sheldon and I decided that day that it would be the perfect spot to scatter Max’s ashes. We were holding on to his ashes for over a year and it was starting to play on my mind. I hated that he was in this box in my cupboard. I wanted to set him free again.

This place felt right. It was natural. It had running water. Surrounded by greenery and mountains. It felt alive and we felt good there too. We thought it would be a good place to go back to one day, when Freya’s older and understands.

We went back the next day to scatter his ashes. We got in the freezing cold water and opened the box. Sheldon poured his ashes in to my hand and then did the same in to his hands. We let go of him in the running water and said our goodbyes and cried our tears.

It was so hard but it was something we needed to do. Our final goodbye to our boy.

Happy belated birthday Britt

It was Britt’s birthday on the 25th. This is one person who doesn’t really enjoy celebrating her birthday, so I was happy to hear she was having a small lunch gathering at a restaurant in Gateway to celebrate on Saturday. Happy birthday my friend. Glad we could celebrate together.

[Sorry about the blurry Instagram pics]

Naju

My friend Sam came back home on a short holiday with her partner Lloyd and new baby girl, Ella. A friend of hers that she used to work with, made Max and Freya a little knitted tooth each. It’s got a dent at the top for the tooth and then the tooth fairy replaces the tooth with money. I loved this idea and thought it was so sweet. Sam was worried about giving me both after we lost Max but I wanted both of them. Our babies came out as a pair and these gifts were made for them both as a pair and that’s the way it’ll stay. Big thanks to Shahnaz Ahmed for taking the time out and making these for our kids even though you’ve never even met us! Please go take a look at her website and she’s also on Etsy.

Sam also got me this very cool tea towel from a pop up shop called Ham. A rabbit bouncing on a trampoline – how could you not love that?

The tapestry ‘rabbit on my head’ will get hung up in Freya’s room.

Thanks Sam for being the incredibly generous person that you are. Love you so much.

Easter brunch

OK, Easter was a while ago but I’m now trawling through all my old pics, looking to see what I can write about. I will work forward eventually so just bear with me.

Mariza was here from Cape Town for a week over Easter time. Sam invited us over to her place for brunch on the Saturday. We took a drive there with Silas and Freya. Sam really outdid herself. Her breakfast was better than any restaurant breakfast I’ve had before.
