Freya’s 1st birthday

We celebrated Freya’s first birthday on 18th February. We only wanted something small – direct family only. I’m so glad we did it this way too because Freya was actually so sick and wasn’t herself.

I got quite into decorating our place for her birthday though. This is what Pinterest does to people. You start obsessing over decorations! I could feel myself getting sucked in to the black hole I call Pinterest but then I stopped myself. It’s her FIRST birthday. She won’t have a clue. Save your energy for when she’s older. I’ve already created a ‘Kids – Party’ board on Pinterest so I’m ready for it.

I’ll upload some of the pics from my big camera tomorrow. These were quick snaps taken on my phone.

Easter brunch

OK, Easter was a while ago but I’m now trawling through all my old pics, looking to see what I can write about. I will work forward eventually so just bear with me.

Mariza was here from Cape Town for a week over Easter time. Sam invited us over to her place for brunch on the Saturday. We took a drive there with Silas and Freya. Sam really outdid herself. Her breakfast was better than any restaurant breakfast I’ve had before.

Friends

We’ve had a lot of visitors from the UK recently who met Freya for the first time. Although all these visits were far too brief for my liking, I know what it’s like when you get back here on holiday, after being away for so long. Your family want you and all of you. You have so many friends and family to see that by the end of your holiday, you need another holiday.

It was so good to see you all my friends – just wish we could have had more time together.

Sorry about the grainy pics – taken on my phone.

Twat

I play a lot of Words With Friends on my phone. I always have the maximum amount of games going and I’m a complete addict. So there are moments like these, which I have to document because it makes me laugh out loud.

‘Sorry, twat is not an acceptable word.’

Um, yes it is. I’ve met a few of them.

Finally…

I know it’s been a while since my last post. Then I was thinking whether I actually have the energy to carry on with this blog at all! When I started I was in London, living a very busy life, going to lots of new restaurants and bars, experimenting and cooking new recipes in the kitchen, photographing it all and documenting my every move.

Now, life has changed. We moved back home to South Africa, I became a mother, we bought a house, I got a job and now all of a sudden I have NO time to do anything, never mind sit down to work on my blog. It’s sad but somehow I’m still holding on to it because there’s still a lot that I have to say. Funny that…

I can’t promise lots of recipes because I seriously can’t be arsed at the end of the day to do anything more than grilled chicken and salad. Not even a fancy salad. Just some leaves thrown out of a Woolies bag. Bam, there’s your dinner Sheldon.

But I can promise some nice pics and a witty anecdote on some days. Some, not all!

These pics were taken this morning. One is of Freya having her morning bottle in bed with us. The next was taken when I took her for a walk to Bread Ahead at 6.30am to get a fresh loaf of  rye bread. Gotta love a good sunrise hey?

What the N?

So the ‘N’ button on my keyboard no longer works. It’s so annoying. You really do need “N’s” in your life. So once my laptop is fixed, I’ll get back on the ol’ blog. I’m not sure how you’ll all cope without me for so long but please do try.

Over and out.

Gifts

I’ve been helping Josie a bit with setting up her room for the imminent arrival of their twin girls and the other day I took my Dad over there to help build the cot and put up a shelf. You see, her husband is about as handy as my husband when it comes to DIY. They’re both such good men – just not very good with tools!

Anyway, she was so grateful and gave us both a bag of homemade pasteis de nata (hot out the oven) and I was given an extra pressie which I opened when I got home. Well, Freya opened it – I think she was more excited about the paper and ribbons than the gift inside it. She’ll appreciate it later come December / Jan / Feb . . .

020103The shoes on the right came in a bag FULL of clothes / hand-me-downs from her cousin, Milla, the most well dressed kid in Durban. Freya and I are both VERY grateful for all the goods. Especially these little shoes. Can’t wait for her planks to fit in to them.

Hot, humid day in Durban

It was so hot here a few weekends ago. We were lying on our verandah enjoying the cool breeze but it was still super hot. We don’t have a pool so I decided to use the next best thing for Freya – our cooler box. It was the perfect fit. It’s safe. She can’t fall over. She was cool as a cucumber and enjoyed splashing around in her makeshift pool.
